Reconciling Ministries

Reconciling Ministries exists to enable full participation of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the life of the United Methodist Church, both in policy and practice.

Statement of Inclusion

As a Reconciling Congregation, members of Portland's First Church have pledged to welcome and support all who want to worship with us, regardless of race, gender, class or sexual orientation. We are a diverse faith community that mirrors our community at large because we believe that in God's house, ALL are welcome.

Quarterly Speaker Programs

Reconciling Ministries sponsors regular presentations at First Church. Past topics have addressed the reconciling movement within the United Methodist Church and the reconciling/welcoming/affirming movements within other faith traditions including Buddhism, Catholicism, Judaism and the Mormonism.

Portland PRIDE

Participating in Portland's Annual PRIDE weekend is one way that we witness to our community. Each year First Church members of all stripes march together in the PRIDE parade. We invite you to march with us each June!

R+Friends Lunch

On the third Sunday of every month, Reconciling Ministries invites you to join us for lunch. We meet in the Fellowship Hall following the Coffee Hour and sample a new restaurant each month. Whether you're a First Church member, a regular visitor or new to our community this is a great way to meet new friends, enjoy Portland's rich food scene and learn about our open and inclusive faith community. Everyone interested in the Reconciling Program at FUMC is invited.

Reconciling Ministry Sunday

On the first Sunday in February, First Church commemorates our commitment to the reconciling movement with a special service celebrating our diversity and inclusiveness as not just a "welcoming congregation", but more importantly as a congregation where members of the LGBT community are deeply involved in the spiritual and service life of the church.

Worlds AIDS Sunday

On the first Sunday in December, we remember those who have passed and those that are living with HIV/AIDS through a special liturgy and after service activities during the coffee hour.
